Happy New Year! Morbid symptoms are seemingly everywhere you look these days, but I am feeling cautiously optimistic about 2022 after a couple of terrible years. As Mariame Kaba says, hope is a discipline.
There is much to be hopeful about in Chile right now as they prepare to draft a new constitution—thanks to a massive social rebellion—with the climate and ecological crisis front and center and a millennial socialist as president. Meanwhile, here in the country largely responsible for Chile’s decades of brutal dictatorship and neoliberalism, we still have a terrible constitution that appears to be headed towards a crisis. It is hard to imagine right now, but if we play our cards right maybe we can follow Chile’s lead and write a new one, too.
